Effects of zinc deficiency on food intake and feeding patterns of rats.

چکیده
I. The effects of alterations of the protein and zinc concentrations of a semi-synthetic diet on the food intake and dietary preferences of Zn-deficient and normal rats have beencompared. 2. The voluntary food intake of Zn-deficient rats fell to 70 96 of that of the controls. The day-to-day variation of intake increased markedly and was associated with a cyclical pattern of food consumption. When the food intake of deficient rats was slightly restricted the troughs of the cycles disappeared. 3. Concurrent with the fall in food intake, Zn-deficient rats ceased to gain weight, but a similar change was found with pair-fed controls. 4. Force-feeding Zn-deficient rats with 140 yo of their voluntary intake rapidly induced signs of ill-health. 5. Reduction of the protein content of the diet from 20 to 5 % resulted in an increased food intake and the disappearance of the cyclical pattern of intake. Growth, however, was not renewed. 6. Zn-deficient rats responded to a Zn-supplemented diet within 1-2 h by an increased food intake.

The effects of morphine and nicotine co-administration on body weight, food intake and appetite-regulating peptides in rats
Previous studies in humans and animals have reported that nicotine administration decreases body weightand caloric intake. Opiate and cigarette have been used concomitantly as drug abuse. The aim of the present study was, therefore, to analyze the effect of chronic co-administration of nicotine and morphine on food intake, body weight and on some feeding-associated peptides. All experiments wer...
متن کاملPatterns of food intake and self-selection of macronutrients in rats during short-term deprivation of dietary zinc.
Although it has been known for more than 50 years that zinc (Zn) deficiency regularly and consistently causes anorexia in many animal species, the basic mechanism(s) that cause this phenomenon still remain(s) an enigma. The following studies describe feeding behavior in the early stages of zinc deficiency in the rat model. In one experiment, we used computerized feeding monitors that measured t...
متن کاملEffects of different doses of zinc chloride on passive avoidance learning and memory in streptozotocin-induced diabetic adult male rats
Introduction: Zinc is an essential rare element that plays an important role in synaptic plasticity and modulation of the activity of central nervous system and is involved in learning and memory. Increasing zinc intake may protect against conditions associated with zinc deficiency, such as diabetes. Some studies have revealed that zinc deficiency in diabetic subjects is due to hogher excret...
متن کاملZinc deficiency increases hypothalamic neuropeptide Y and neuropeptide Y mRNA levels and does not block neuropeptide Y-induced feeding in rats.
Zinc deficiency reduces intake and produces an unusual approximately 3.5-d cycle of intake in rats. The mechanism underlying the anorexia and cycling has not yet been defined; current hypotheses suggest that alterations in amino acid metabolism and neurotransmitter concentrations may be a part of this anorexia. Recent reports indicate that appetite-stimulating neuropeptide Y (NPY) may be elevat...

Background and Objectives: This study was designed to investigate the association between parental behavior and the dietary intake of Tehranian preschool children aged 2-6 years. Materials and Methods: In a cross-sectional study conducted on 310 children aged 2-6 years from the kindergartens of 22 districts of Tehran, a qualitative validated 85-item food frequency questionnaire was completed b...
